The next.app devCon 2026 in Berlin marked the launch of a new international multi-ecosystem developer conference. The event positioned itself as one of Europe’s most significant gatherings for mobile, AI, security, gaming, and immersive technology professionals. Its central innovation was the integration of eight specialized conferences under one roof: Android, Swift, Flutter, React Native, Agentic Coding, Mobile Application Security, XR, and Mobile Gaming. Rather than treating these fields as separate communities, the event framed them as parts of a shared software-engineering ecosystem in which artificial intelligence, security, new interfaces, and immersive technologies increasingly overlap.

The most important development for the XR sector was the debut of the XR & Mobile Game DeveloperCon. This dedicated track brought together mobile developers, game creators, AR and VR specialists, and spatial-computing practitioners, reflecting a clear industry shift: XR is no longer positioned exclusively as a niche discipline built around high-end headsets, but as an extension of the broader mobile application and gaming ecosystem. For development teams, the practical relevance lay in the combination of technical sessions, workshops, masterclasses, showcases, and networking. The program covered not only creative experience design but also engineering topics such as performance optimization, debugging, profiling, testing, multiplayer infrastructure, and tooling for spatial applications.

This convergence of mobile development and XR was reinforced by the conference’s broader context and by emerging hardware platforms from Meta and XREAL. While Meta VR Glasses, announced for spring 2027, are pushing VR toward a lighter, more socially and productivity-oriented glasses format, XREAL Aura, expected to arrive in late 2026, is advancing optical see-through AR within the Android XR ecosystem. Apple Vision Pro, meanwhile, remains a reference point for high-end spatial computing and premium enterprise experiences.

Together, these developments suggest that the next competitive cycle will be defined less by raw display specifications and more by developer ecosystems, AI integration, interaction quality, comfort, and sustainable content pipelines. The next.app devCon 2026 demonstrated that XR has entered a new phase of industry integration, in which immersive technologies, mobile engineering, and spatial computing are increasingly converging.
